Volunteer Story: Tom

We asked a few very dedicated and loyal volunteers about how they became involved, what they do, and what magic happens at the EquiCenter to keep them coming back.  Each shared a special time they will never forget. This is Tom Critelli's story:

Tom, 57, began volunteering at the EquiCenter in 2012 after meeting the “wonderful EC staff” at Paddles for Saddles at Midtown Athletic Club.  His enthusiasm for all aspects of the EquiCenter has resulted in a variety of volunteer roles including side-walker, horse leader, gardener, fundraiser, and facility and grounds maintenance.

“I love being part of a team that enables and empowers our students. We offer a very successful therapy that, at the same time, is a win-win benefit for all participants: horses, students, staff and volunteers. What could be better?”

When not volunteering, Tom works in sales for Jackson Welding and Gas Products. He also rides and shows his thoroughbred mare. Tom recalls a very special moment:

“I was at a horse show watching a class with a friend who had brought a client in a wheelchair. This young man looked up at me and commented that it must be wonderful to ride and that he would never be able to.  I looked at him and said ‘want to bet about that?’ He is now an EquiCenter student who is riding!”
